Storage bins for potting soil

I need to remove my potting soil, peat moss, top soil, manure etc. from the bags into something so I can shovel it out to pot flowers/veg/seeds with out the hassle of the bags. I buy the largest bags I can get so they need to be big enough to hold the entire bag. What kind of containers can I use that isn't so expensive?

You could use some of the big totes with lids at Target. I just bought some and they are really inexpensive. Not sure how much they cost but the galvanized metal trash cans would look better.

  • First, what size bags do you purchase? I buy the big bags too and understand how cumbersome they are. Next, what do you consider expensive? Several times throughout the year most big box stores have both see through and pretty colored plastic bins suitable for this purpose on sale. How about a wagon or similar to make easier to move about?

If you need to move it around with you, get one of the large coolers on wheels. The lid will keep pests and water out of it, and you can pull it to where you need it.

I use the large galvanized garbage cans with the tight fitting lids.

Sounds like . you need a big barrel with a lid. OR a big tub with a lid, maybe a plastic one.

You can purchase a compost barrel on wheels for the soil

Plastic tubs with lids go on sale all the time. I use them for everything.

Thanks to everyone, you have been a Big help. The size of the peat moss is 4 cubic & the Miracle Grow is the BIG bag but not sure how much it is. The others are smaller bag like 20 lbs. So I believe the plastic storage bins will work. They won't be moved around since they will be inside of our storage shed so won't need wheels. The lids will help keep out pest & maybe I can get smaller one to old the 20 lb bags to sit on top. Thanks Again
