Rather than taking on the expense of carpet beforeselling, if yours is not a high end community, consider offering 'x' dollars toward new carpet if they give full price offer on house. Factor that in when setting price for your home. That way buyer can choose their carpet color, type, vendor to suit themselves. Less hassle for you and incentive to give you your asking price.

Go with a neutral, beige or light gray. Let me ask you this, what is under the carpet in the bedrooms? Just curious. The reason I ask is that a lot of people are getting away from carpet because of dirt, allergies and everything else that goes with what carpets will contain.

    Go with the berber carpet.

don't put down carpeting at all if there's hardwood underneath of it just rip up the carpet and let the woods show. You'd be better off sand in the wood and staining it Orrville looks nice just a good cleaning and a coat of polyurethane. I know two people who spend thousands of dollars putting down new carpeting just to sell their house and drive by two weeks later and see all their brand new carpeting rolled up laying out in the street for the garbage man to take what a waste of money the even wanted the owners to reduce the price of the house because they were going to have to replace the carpeting cuz they hated it

I agree with pretty much all of the above comments. Are the carpets really bad looking OR would a professional cleaning spruce them up? If you decide to put down new carpeting, I personally would avoid grey as it's been a trend for about four years now - and trends come and go. I'd pick a medium taupe as taupe goes with pretty much anything since it's a combination of beige and gray.

I listed my house two years ago. My carpeting (cream) just needed a cleaning as it still had plenty of wear. The cream carpets looked brand new when professionally done but within two weeks, the new owners ripped them out and put in hardwood; something I was going to do if I had stayed in the house.

Ask your Real Estate agent. They know what's best.

Also, if they are dirty now, then just get them professionally cleaned, by a local (tried and true company) NOT by Kirby, or one of those franchise cleaning companies.

A previous responder, Elaine, cleaned all carpets, only to have them ripped out, by new owners and hardwood installed. Why go thru the expense?

I agree with Lydia. Offer a certain amount towards carpet so new Homer feels like you did that purposely to allow them the freedom of choice. Make sure that you edit whatever the selling agent is going to put online. You really want new Homers to believe that it was done to benefit them. Just have carpets cleaned and ask for people to wear those booties over shoes.
