What type of roof will best suit the 12 sided house we are building?

We are building a Whimsical 12 sided cord & bottle walled house in one of our fields. We have put up 12 beams, and wanted a thatched/palm frond roof, but now realize the Pitch is not steep enough for good drainage.

A Tile roof would look great, but can be expensive. Also a colored metal roof Would look nice as well. They have some beautiful colors now.

I like the metal idea...I doubt the structure would support channel tiles. Thanks for the response

Oh my goodness. While I understand why you want to put a roof on it, it's sort of a shame...that beautiful tree is such a wonderful "roof". Absolutely beautiful!

Since you must, I agree with Screamer 7587 that a colored metal roof would be gorgeous (maybe copper?)

We have Hundreds of trees...all are very beautiful of course, but we need to cover for night time use...winter chill...summer mosquitos..Thanks for taking time to give some ideas. Oh, the 12' uprights are 12 cedar trees from one of our fields. Cows had eaten all the bark, so before they died completely, we cut them for the post & shellaced them...Turned out beautifully..

  • How FUN! I would go with a metal roof of some sort. Looks like a luxury yurt. See if this article helps. Also Google "roof with low pitch" and see if that helps you decide.

I love colored, corrugated steel roofs, but I also love a "living roof," that's covered with soil and planted with native grasses.

Clear sheets like they use on buildings so the tree and the sun and stars can be seen will also bring out your wall colors, some looks like tin but clear see thru. Then string lights on the beams??? Just a thought...

Unless you use flat polycarbonate sheet, the installation of a clear roof would be a bear. The corrugated polycarbonate panels are not designed for angles. Maybe a membrane roof using EPDM. That material lasts forever and is not affected by being under a tree.

I own Cinderella's Castle Scottsdale. It has a roof like this but more pitch like you mentioned yours does not have a big pitch. Take a look at mine it was not easy for the roofer to do but it is cute and my vacationing ladies retreat women like it. If you go on facebook you can press the see all button to see all the photos. It was built for a playhouse for my girls and as a designer I turned it into a guest cottage for a lady wanting to come for a getaway. I would love to hear about your wine bottle wall if you can get ahold of me as I have saved tons of wine bottles for a project.
