  • Is this for temporary or occasional use? If permanent electricity is desired, I would hire a qualified electrician. Use of cords or cables can void your homeowners insurance.

I would use the size that a professional brings with him to do the job for you!

For general power - lights, opener, a few outlets - 12 gauge 3 wire.

Depends on what your plugging in, in the garage.

Also be careful with DIY electrical connections. Be sure you know the laws, codes and inspection requirements in your town, county or city. Also know that if it causes a fire and it was not professionally installed it could negate your homeowner insurance so you'd be left paying for any damage by yourself.

I'm with almost everyone else and agree you should hire a professional. On the other hand if you're having a party as a one night event and want to run extension cords from the house to the garage for a few hours, get a heavy duty outdoor cord and unplug it as soon as the party is over. Be careful about overloading the circuit. HTH

If it is permanent, you need a licensed electrician under building codes. Also, lines to accessory buildings need to be placed in conduit and buried.
