Small bubble bubble-wrap should deter your cat. If he jumps or walis on the bubble-wrap, the popping will scare the cat. You may have to tape down the edges or the cat may pull the wrap off the counter. But cats are wily and figure things out. Make sure the counters have no crumbs or food odors on them. Also, this may be a sunning spot for the cat. But if you have a climbing cat, which is most cats, the cat will find a way. If you think you have trained a cat, just try a nanny cam. One last item: cat crates when you are at not at home. Best wishes 😇

We have dogs, so we can't put food down on the floor for the cat. We have a stool in the kitchen for hubby to sit on in the kitchen and I also use it to get to the top shelves in my cupboards(slight height challenge at 5'3"). We keep the stool by the coffee maker and the cat food bowl just to the side of it. The cat jumps on the stool eats, then jumps down. That is the extent of what the cat does in our kitchen, but we never had anything on the counters the cat would be interested in. Is there certain places they go to? Find something in the odor family they don't like and try putting in the area where they jump up on the counter and maybe that will help them to stay down. Cats have minds of their own and can be pretty stubborn in making changes. Keep working on finding something they don't like to put on your counters and you will be able to find something that works. Sometime you may not have to put up anything to deter them and they will just stay off the counter. Have patience and good luck!

Double sided tape. Also great on furniture to keep cats from clawing!

Good luck with that! Cats and kitchen counters go together like PB and J or ham and eggs. Mine insist in sitting on the windowsill above the sink and watching the birds and other rural animals that populate my property. At first I tried the water spray on the nose. They would jump down but the minute I turned my back, they were right back up there. After several months of no luck with the spray, I decided to just let them sit there and watch the birds. They seem to get so much enjoyment from it. After all, they give me so much laughter and love in return, it's the least I can do.

I agree with Barb, after 30 years of having cats I have pretty much given up. Near the range is another story. I will yell, spray with water and yes swat if they get anywhere near it. Everything else is forgivable.

Never leave food out on the counter. Clean the counter with a citrus scented cleaner. Be consisted; never allow them on the counter. Use a loud hiss to reprimand the cat if they jump up. Make sure they have other places to perch: cat tree, window perch. I've always been able to train my cats in a week or two

get a spray bottle with just water in it.. I didn't let my cat see me squirt her when she got on the table and later the kitchen island..it took two times and no more problem You might have to be a little more persistent if she has been doing it awhile. this has worked with every cat I've had. Good Luck

Sorry for chiming in to this thread so late, but I just had to share this in case it helps someone out. I wish I had gotten this advice years ago as a cat owner.

    My best advice?

Give the book " Ultimate Cat Secrets" a read.

It really is the only long-term solution to discipline your cat, OP.

This might come as a surprise to you, but your cat actually wants to obey you.

It’s kitty’s independent, sassy nature that makes you fall in love with him, but it’s this very attitude that makes it frustrating to train fun behaviours into your favourite feline.

Cats respond best to positive reinforcement – yelling, punishing or disciplining your cat just won’t work.

In my opinion, Ultimate Cat Secrets is a must-have for all cat lovers. It's not just a cat training manual – it’s one of the quickest and most comprehensive guides to living with a cat that I’ve ever seen.

The easy access audio format makes it a breeze to digest from your computer or your mobile device and the lessons inside are easy to implement. And if that’s not enough for you, ordering now will score you FIVE great bonuses:

    1) How to toilet train your cat and get rid of that stinky litter box forever.

    2) Extra tips audio program which includes basic first aid and tips on my favourite kitty calming remedy.

    3) Pet medical recorder – an absolute essential for parents of asthma cats or any kitty with a chronic medical condition.

    4) Downloadable transcripts of the entire program and all the bonus materials.

    5) 100 recipes to pamper your feline friend.

    I HIGHLY recommend it.
