We had something similar at our lake house. We left the steps where they were and built a deck over the entire area.

To save a lot of time, build a small deck 8x 8/ over top of the steps

Divide and conquer. Make a pathway using pavers (which you can paint any color or design), then fill in around the pavers with pebbles. Plants on either side with larger ones closest to the house. Your pathway can lead to a picnic table or a grouping of chairs around a fire pit

Start: clear the grass back 15'.

Use the existing steps as a base to build on... frame around them forming semi-circles & rebuild. This will provide extra width & a "landing" in front of the door. Use river stone or faux stone to set in the sides & mayb top with some flagstone pieces.

Prepare the area you cleared of grass & use a ground sterilant to prevent regrowth. Frame this area in semicircle to match the steps. Place larger pieces of flagstone in a "free form" style,w/ 2-4" between stones; then fill the rest of the space around the flagstone with gravel.

This design will help keep water away from the steps & foundation., & keeps the area cleaner.

    Add plants in barrels/pots. 😊

*if you prefer, you can pour cement around your free-form flagstone & put colored glass, stones etc in the concrete for some color

A deck is your best bet. Maybe you can find some lumber cheap if there's a nearby building being torn down. Make your own pavers for a path.

Add some soil around the foundation so grading slopes the right way. Then build a deck over the steps, as others have suggested. If it were me, I think I would build it so there wasn't much deck space to the left of the door (if you were facing the door from outside), put steps down into the yard right there, and run a narrow deck all the way to the fence. I would also put another set of steps off the deck near the gate.

I see great potential for small porch. would look great. Flowering shrubs would look good like hydrangea. Lots of rocks. If there is downspout, you can stack flat rocks under it...

plant few spreaders. Then when it rains, you will have small waterfall that sounds awesome.

Use as many perennials as you can. Less work & money. Good luck!
