We have a cement pond that we do not know how to become a focal point in our backyard. Thank you very much for feedback!

My aunt had one, and fish helped her keep a good eco balance.

    A good nursery should know.

We have two in our area: Earl May and Campbell's. When you find your nursery check if they have water plants. If so, you are on your way.

I'm certain your unusual water feature will be outstanding after the work.

  • Hello Shari, we had a pretty bad pond in our backyard (you won't believe how good yours look comparing to what we had) and we DIYed it into a gorgeous place now. If you'd like to see how we did it, please visit our pond project posts:

On a last note, your pond has really good bones, so I am sure it will be less work for you than it was for us ;-) -Handan

Covering the cement with rock, or wood, reed or such, or paint the cement and place and/or plant greenery around the enclosure. Look for used cheap thrift store statues or decorative elements that can be placed inside. Again use bushes, greenery everywhere. If you have quirky taste find some items that fit your taste, one taller than the next one. The rule of three in design works in ponds also. Have fun, you have such possibilities with what you have. If really industrious and if you'd like a timeless fairy garden pond, get moss to grow over the cement, there is a milk mixture to paint the cement with to encourage the moss you add to spread quickly. The ingredients are easily found on the web.

How exiting! You could go Greek with a fountain and statues/benches and plants, you could face it with rock which is wider at the bottom than top until it looks like a rocky depression that's become a small pond. (You can see this in Missouri a lot). You could go to deepest jungle with plants and strange statues, think about the old King Kong movie, fish for all designs and Lilly pads. They even sell fake Lilly pads now! You could use wood to surround it and go oriental style! Wow...wish I had your problem! If you have small kids you could play it up to them...a little deck around it, plastic boats, put flamingos and pelicans around and a sunken sand box with lid...the little green turtle would go fine with that! A little pirate treasure box filled with beads and rings, etc.
