I purchased a local brand of bagged soil for fruits and vegetables from a local nursery. Growing like weeds now . . .
Strawberries seem to like a sandier soil, but I have less sandy soil and they do well.
Dig the soil over well. Add lots of compost to enrich the soil and remove any weeds, including the roots of weeds.
Strawberries like rich soil the most. If the soil is heavy clay or poor sand, add well-decomposed organic material. Mulch after planting, to protect the surface soil and to keep the strawberries clean.
If the soil is very acidic, add three quarters of a cup of dolomite per square meter of complete plant food before planting.
You can get a soul tester at any garden center but the best way to test it is to call your local extension service. They will have you take a small sample from different parts of your bed and put it in an envelope (which they may provide). This will provide the most accurate results.
Rememeber that strawberries love a lot of full sun. Some shade is ok but they will not produce as prolifically as in full sun. Also try to keep them protected from wind.
