I have both. Gas is inexpensive. You can also get a heat exchanger that will heat up your house when it's cold.

We heat our home with a wood burning stove, which was already installed when bought the house. It is dirty! Bark & dirt attached to the wood constantly fall off in transit to the stove. Then, there's ash. The ash build-up has to be removed. Even with an ash bucket & fireplace tools, there is spillage. Unless you buy wood & have it delivered, it is labor intensive to cut & stack. Either way, someone has to bring it in and move it to the stove/fireplace. Hands down, I'd go with gas.

Gas is a lot less work and cleaner. Be sure to get gas logs that do not require a vent so the damper in your fireplace can stay closed trapping the heat from the logs inside your home. If the last gas have to be vented, damper open, the heat from the logs will suck heat out of your home ad it exits your chimney. Using logs that should be vented with the damper closed can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. Be safe, understand what you are getting.
