What's the quickest, least messy way to remove popcorn ceiling?

My whole new house is covered with popcorn ceilings and I haven't found anyone that will commit to removing them except for one contractor who wanted to charge $300.00+. I would like to try doing it myself.
Thanks,
Beth

removing it on lower ceilings is fairly easy if you don't mind ladder work. It is labor intensive, however. It is also very messy. Spray the popcorn with warm water, scrap with a spackling trowel. Repeat. You may find that re-sheeting the ceiling with drywall will be easier in the long run.

If you have higher ceilings or a lot of sq. footage, $300 is a great price.
