How to grow your own mini garden from your kitchen sink?

Since I am obsessed right now about raised bed growing and natural foods, I was wondering if there was an easy way to grow onions, lettuce, tomatoes, maybe cucumber right alongside your kitchen sink.

I rent a home, and putting my own raised bed in my backyard is not an option. So I wanted to know if there is a cheap and effective way to grow my own mini garden inside my home.

None of those vegetables will grow inside your home. They get way too big. You could grow in old tires. It's not permanent so shouldn't be a problem. Just fill old tires with garden soil and plant in them. Works perfectly and can be removed if you move.

Thank you Cindy, I never would have thought of this. I love the idea of not having to construct a raise bed then removing. My children are going to love this!

I grow all my basil, oregano and parsley on my kitchen windowsill. oh and celery. My tomatoes, peppers and zucchini are all in large pots in my porch. I'm not sure if your area but a lot of things can be grown in containers that won't harm the yard and are not forever.

Bernice, thank you. I love herbs and will probably try my green thumb starting with these items. Arizona is very hot, so I'm going to give it a whirl.

No sunny balcony? How about hanging a plant holder out your windows? You say you live in an apartment. I'm wondering if you can't talk to the owner about starting an apartment community 'farm' area. My old apartment did that and it was a great added benefit and it may help draw in good tenants.

Thank you Seethebeauty for taking the time to respond. Appreciate the suggestion.

We usually stack them 2-3 high and then fill with stones at the bottom for drainage. Then a mixture of mulch and soil at the upper end. I have a friend who did an entire raised bed garden using over 50 tires!

I grow my basil, green onions, & watercress on my kitchen counter in a vase of water... works great ! if you have good light from windows, lettuce, peppers & tomatoes grow well indoors in large pots (at least 2-ft of soil). I feed the planters with Miracle Grow once a month & change the water in vases weekly.

Wow, thanks Becca! If possible could you share a picture of your vase with herbs, green onions etc. I would like to get a visual.

Many plants can grow quite well in water! Just change the water about once or twice a week to keep it clean. Remove any leaves that are below the water line as you don't want the (submerged) leaves decaying and forming bacteria in the water.

Wow nice! This gives me an idea.
