When I found this beat up star-shaped basket at the thrift store, I knew I could transform it into some festive decor for Independence Day. I could have filled it with red and white flowers- but then I had a MUCH better idea!
I have a great new thrift store near my house that I've been shopping at- and just in time for the 4th of July, I stumbled upon this beat up star basket! It needed a little TLC, but those are initials I am all too familiar with!
First, I spray painted it bright blue! Sure, the white would have worked for a patriotic theme, but I wanted something bolder and blue was the ticket.
Now for the filler- after I nixed flowers, I decided to create some DIY "fireworks" using stuff I had in my craft room: Cardboard tube, decorative paper, tissue, etc.
I created the wicks with tissue and pipe cleaners, and then I covered each tube in patriotic paper and stuck a decorative vintage graphic on each one. They're so fun and easy to make- click HERE to get the each DIY step!
Then, I filled my blue star basket with the "fireworks" and other festive bits from the craft store. Perfect for my front porch or decor for a July 4th BBQ- Happy Independence Day!

I love it when I see things that are upcycLing, cheap and look great. It can be used for other holidays like christmas, turning the firecrackers into candles using wrapping paper and vintage cards. I'm looking at my baskets in a new way.
