Repurposed Fireworks Craft

How often do you look at items that seem like they should go into the recycle bin or the trash bin and stop to think, maybe I could use this for something? I’m betting that you do that often! I know I do. I have one box full of just such items. This fun little repurposed fireworks craft is a way I put some of those items to use. This would be a great craft to create with children for some 4th of July party decor.
After I made my Patriotic Hats Wreath, I was left with a couple of empty ribbon spools.  Before I tossed them, I stopped to have a look and an idea came to mind. I gathered some tulle, some mesh ribbon, star straws, and fabric scrap.

Using a line of hot glue, I wrapped a piece of scrap fabric around the spool. I folded the fabric over at the spot that it met to give it a straight line at the seam. I added a piece of blue ribbon at both ends. They are also hot glued on. Since the ends of the spool are white, they didn’t need to be changed.
I cut a piece of card stock and a piece of fabric into 3×3 inch squares.I glued the card stock to the fabric and folded it into a triangle. I trimmed it off with red ribbon and a foam star. It’s glued to the rim of the spool.
To give the look of an exploding firecracker, I stuffed mesh ribbon, tulle, and a few strips of gold ribbon into the hole at the top of the spool.
I finished off the look by cutting several straws with stars on them into various lengths. I added a small gold foam star to each piece of straw.
The straws are pressed into the ribbon and threaded through the mesh to hold them in place.
These would make cute table decorations for a 4th of July Party.
With some help with cutting and hot gluing, this would be a fun craft to have little ones help make.  They could personalize them by adding their initial to the center or by writing on the ribbon with a paint pen before attaching it to the spool.
I’m sure there are lots of creative ways to use these empty ribbon spools. If you’ve got any tips for ideas, I’d love to hear about them!
