What are you painting over with? A good latex paint should work.
You'll first need to prime the paneling with something like Kilz which is a stain blocking primer. Then you can pant over the paneling like you would a normal wall. You'll want to mask off the doors/window trim around the paneling if there is any. Cut the edges in about 1/2 inch with a paint brush and then roll the primer on. Allow it to dry for a full day and then paint with whatever type latex paint you want.
Prime and Paint. I like Behr paint with primer. But this depends on how light you want to go. Also on the type of paneling you have. I painted a creamy color over ours on a fireplace wall. Then painted while in the dark and dated kitchen in our second home. It came out great. French County for the kitchen. Used blue knobs. I loved it.
Prime!! Some paints are primer and paint in one. I love the look it gives.
Zinsser makes a product called Bin that is an excellent primer/sealer to start with. Once you've primed the paneling, you can pretty much paint it with whatever finish you like. I would recommend an eggshell enamel which would downplay the grooves. Remember, the glossier the paint, the more imperfections it reveals.
Painting my mom's dark paneling,it is real wood w/rough texture.I was told by gentleman at Ace Hardware to clean, lightly sand bef painting.Said to use a primer first (can use a paint w/primer in it) but hers has really rough texture,so were using a separate primer first.depending on type/finish on paneling,if your wanting to use a latex/gloss paint, you will def have to primer surface first.
