Any ideas on displaying old wooden door from family farm house

Question

The door is 2 1/2' x 6', currently many layers of old paint that i intend to strip.Has original handle/latch so another question is best manner to remove that old paint as well-?- strip?

Old doors make great focal points as wall hangings, room dividers when paired with additional doors and even as a headboard upright for a daybed or horizontal for a queen or king. If the patina is nice, leave it as is.

If it's a solid door which I'm sure it is, you can cut it lengthwise, place in a 90 degree angle and secure at the back.  You can then add shelves to make it a corner display. They are beautiful.

I don't have any suggestions, but how lucky are you to have this family heirloom. I would love to have a door my either of my grandparents homes. Make sure that you find a place to put a small engraved plaque about it's origins and when you re-did it. Your decedents will thank you.

The last thing I'd do with it is to cut it - you can never put it back together again - but ' over the top of the door hangers ' used for shelves sounds good.

I would hang it on the wall as is * lightly sanded to remove any loose paint--be careful because this paint could have lead! Then the door can be cleaned with some Howards Feed & Wax which is great stuff for all wood!). for conversation piece and for display, keeping the door as is will add a very unique charm to a wall. I would try to locate 4 plate racks that screw into the wall (think large mirror hook idea) so that you do not have to put any holes in the door. Good luck and what a great piece to have!

I have a painted door about the same size as yours. I have mine standing in a corner with a vase of curly willow behind it so just the tops of the branches show behind the door. You can place a chair in front of it (which I have done in the past). Right now it's the backdrop for a vignette featuring a 3' tall child's cupboard among other cool vintage pieces. The only thing added to the door itself is a wreath hanger. I love it and so does everyone who visits!

We are thinking about using a 100+ year old door for a dining table. Would need a beveled piece of glass over it, of course. Adding some metal for the legs/bottom. Not sure what your decorative needs are, but the possibilities would be endless with a good piece of old wood.

I can't say I'd ever strip it, but I agree with lightly sanding off the rough stuff -- or depending upon how you like the look, you can take a putty knife and go at it carefully. Then seal it with some polyacrylic (no yellowing) if you're afraid of lead. If you're not, I'd go with the wax, too. It won't prevent more chipping, though.

If you DO choose to strip it, go with Citristrip. You put it on, LEAVE it ALONE overnight. The paint will come off with a light plastic scraper. No effort. Plus, it's not a flesh-eating chemical and you could do it in your basement, if you need to. I strip things in my kitchen. The ticket is to leave the stuff alone, no matter how you want to peek! :)

Old doors are my favorite display pieces! I love them in their original paint. I have one standing in the corner of my porch and change it up with seasonal décor. There are so many things that you can hang from them. I have one I leaned against the fence in my garden and I will be having hubby attach metal buckets to it to plant.
