How to remedy clay soil

I know there's something out there that will break up clay soil and make it easier to work with. Other than digging up acres of this stuff, what can you recommend?

Usually adding compost and sand to clay soil will help loosen it up considerably. Use a rototiller, and work it into the soil.
Thank you everyone. At one point I had to use a pick axe and I just knew there had to be a better way. I appreciate your suggestions and will use them all.
Ah, I've asked same question...only my clay seems to be more than clat.
