White, light green or bright yellow
Depending on the size let's say it's 10 x 10, I would then paint it a light color like a cream, light beige, light green, light yellow. You get the idea any light color. Be sure to paint the ceiling in a ceiling white color because if you don't and use the same colors of the walls you're going to get a very closed in feeling.
Oh, I must add...you can get more light with these cannister like skylights that are small, easy to install and add light. I know that's not the question, but I am just hearing about these things and I love the idea of them.
Butter cream in a satin finish with semi gloss white trims.
Another thing you can do is put a mirror in the room where it can reflect the light. Also when you paint use something that will reflect light - like a semi gloss finish. Satin finish might also work, but I'd ask the paint 'expert' at the store where you buy the paint for their opinion. As a matter of fact, I'd look at several stores. Smaller independently owned stores usually have more informed people. Another good choice for questions is Sherwin Williams stores. That doesn't mean you have to buy the paint at any store where you ask questions, just keep a list of what they say. One thing I found when I was younger was that blue, rust and white REALLY brightened up a room with only one window. I was totally surprised. I thought yellow would be what I'd have to use, but I took a chance on the other colors (it was a little boy's room) those colors really worked great
HTH
If you want to brighten up the space find a lighter color that you can live with. My family is old school, kitchens are yellow. I know there is a reasoning behind it, but I never understood it. That being said, a nice, buttery yellow is a soft color without glaring.
Always light fresh colors and bright white ceiling paint.
