Got pins? Got babies? How to keep one away from the other!
I wanted a pin cushion which would hold my pins but keep them away from my baby boy, who gets into everything. I also wanted to be able to see my needles and pins, so it dawned on me that I could use a jar with a clippy lid, which I could keep shut when I'm not using them.
I had some fabric to hand, but of course you can use a much prettier piece if you have one, and so just grabbed a dinner bowl and drew round it as a guide.
Once it was cut out, I ran a running stitch round the edge to gather it up and stuffed it with some wool snipings from my pom-pom projects, which I keep for reasons like this. You can use anything suitable of course, and even throw in some lavender to make it smell nice.
Once it's stuffed and sewn shut, you can pop it into your jar opening side down, and fix it with some hot melt glue, or not even bother as it was a little bit bigger than the jar and so squished in and held fine.
If I was going to make it for a gift, I'd probably cut a round base to fit the bottom of the jar and then six segments to create a really sweet little domed pincushion, in cute fabrics in pretty colours, but this was a super quick make. I'll have a go at a cuter version another time.
There we go! He can't get to the pins should he manage to get to the jar, and they won't fall out of the jar and get stuck into the carpet if it gets knocked over.
