put baking soda in a small dishes and leave inside drawers. Spray down with febreeze. leave it outside in the sunshine. Smoke is very hard to remove you may need to repeat the steps. Good luck.

clean it with white vinegar and then and then spray with febreeze
Put it outside in the sun and spray with a 50/50 water and vinegar solution . Let dry then you should be okay to paint .
Also air the room out as much as possible- best of luck!
Thank you for all your help-trying vinegar/water now and baking soda in drawers-Love this site-have a great Sunday!
I'd take it out into the sunshine and spray it with a baking soda/water mixture. Then wipe down well, let dry in the sun and whitewash.
Try Odoban. I had a chest of drawers that reeked of stale smoke. I put eucalyptus leaves in the drawers. It worked!
Hi Cindy, cigarette smoke leaves a residue on everything it touches. The best thing we've found is TSP. Leave it to soak into the rope and dry outside in the sunshine. Out in the sun helps often. It will take a few days in the sun. Also try washing with dish soap and rinsing well before you put outside.
