I plan to have the screen painted all black. Would this type of stone look good
whitewashed?

I love the look of whitewashed stone/brick around a fireplace. It takes some work but would be beautiful.

I think it would look great white washed! A new mantle would work wonders as well .

I'd use Unicorn Spit gel stain. There are several choices. I put it on everything

  • Whitewashing or painting it, you could also do tile or river stone over the existing brick.

Whitewashing would look great!!! But I think you need to replace the grill--- it is too small for the size of the fireplace and looks dated. Pick something more open and rustic --- this will work wonders.

Perhaps just changing the color of the grout would work. You can buy grout stain. It's tedious, but if you don't like it you can always paint.

I'm with the other two ladies......a white washed look would be stunning and would also create the illusion of a much larger space. Have fun with your project and enjoy your 'new' room.
