I have attempted to do his already, but it's not right. I want to know how to install an old double French door into an existing opening, so that it fits and closes correctly.

This is not an easy task. Doors are "made" to fit specific made frames, not generic fits. You have to be exact in measuring, cutting by reframing the door opening or cutting back on the doors. Likely you will not be able to DIY this. Best advice is to buy new prehung doors and frame that fit your current opening.

how much gap is between the door and the door jam? If there is a large gap you might have to cut a thin board and insert it between the door and the door jam and then insert small pieces to have an even space around the door. Then pre-nail the door into the space. Then put a frame around both sides of the door. hope this is some help.

I agree that this is very difficult. Instead of using hinges, etc., how about hanging them on sliding barn door hardware. You can remove the hinges, fill that area in with plastic wood, sand and paint. You'll need a double barn door kit for this.

There are any number of YouTube videos on how to install French doors, but I saw only this one that may offer a few useful tips: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdd9NOttPVU

Hey this will be difficult for DIY, but can be done. Check the frame is level & plumb, Ignore the existing hinges. Set one door first allowing standard clearance about 2-3mm to side, top , and bottom. Mark the frame and door hinge placement approximately 100-150 down from the top and up from the bottom of the door with athe third hinge central between. Check out for the hinges and fix this door on position, I suggest fitting the inside door first if it is a rebated door system. Then the hard bit, fitting the second door. Once fitted with clearance all round, mark the hinges and repeat as per the first door. Hint; do not use loose pin hinges on outward opening doors. Full all timber check outs and paint. Take your time and it can be done. Good Luck.
