    Hi Larry,

Below is a link to an article by the Humane Society that you may find very helpful. According to the article random digging may be a sign the dog smells of hears something underground and are trying to get to it (moles? gophers? mice? or maybe Japanese beetles laying eggs? or their grubs eating the roots of your grass? wow I wish I spoke dog in order to find out why MY dog does the same thing) ..... http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/dogs/tips/digging.html

I hope this is of some help to you. "The Dog Whisperer" Cesar MIlan, on his website cesarsway.com , says about the same thing the Humane Society does:

I hope these are of some help to you ... Thanks for coming to Hometalk :) and Good Luck!

If she keeps going back to the same spots, try to spray those areas with hot sauce/water mixture and she should avoid that area for a while. Fill in the holes and spray the top. If it works, your dog should leave that area alone, but may need occasional reminders.

There are many ways suggested for stopping the digging. The dog could just be bored. Toys and time from you or the kids could help. If he is smart and spends a lot of time alone he has to do something to entertain himself. Put yourself in his paws. My Dakota would dig when he was a puppy. He dug one hole and would put in his toys and then lay in it. My son filled it in and so Dakota picked another space and re-created his hole. Finally I told my son DO NOT FILL IN THE HOLE. To this day he has not dug another one and still uses that one for is toys. Hey, a guy's gotta have a space for his stuff. I have included a cute picture of my two boys watching from inside the door said son fill in the hole and the other picture is them verifying that the hole is really, really gone.

Most of the time if my dog digs a hole he knows something is under the ground. So we found out that we had groundhogs!

If your dog is put out in the yard a lot, he very well could be bored and/or lonely BUT if he has a thick coat, he might just be digging down to the cooler soil in which to lay. My son's dog is part Husky so he is often digging a cooler bed for himself on a hot day.

However, another topic is ... how often is the dog walked and exercised? When we had a dog, he usually had four walks a day - morning, after lunch, later in the afternoon and before bed. I'm always amazed at dog owners that want a dog then never walk it. They are built for exercising and running and if they are just stuck out in a yard, you can understand their boredom and frustration. Please be assured I am NOT referring to you and your dog - I'm just talking about something I see a lot in my own subdivision. Good luck with your garden holes!!

Do you tie her up? Dogs usually dig out of boredom.

We have big dogs with lots of long thick hair. When they would get hot & want/need a cooler place to lay, they would dig holes & sometimes same one over & over. We solved this problem by getting small plastic pools ( not blow up kind), filling them with water. Now they play & lay in the pool to cool of. No more digging. If doesn't work, not much money lost. They also love bringing their toys in with them.
