Well the first thing is to weed out. Living in a house that is 112 years old, I must say it is difficult. However we have an attic with the dimensions of the house (although much in eaves) so lots of room for packed storage. We have four closets upstairs (one per bedroom) + a roomy linen closet. Maybe think outside what your closets used to look like. Maybe make one closet just for hanging, another with shelving. If you have a laundry room maybe store some things there. If you have any small spaces maybe one could be converted to a closet. Use large tall cabinets to store folded things. If you have the floor space use more bureaus and chests. I think the main thing is to keep weeding out (now if only I could follow that advice)

Get underbed boxes and put out of season clothes in them, or put them in one of those bags you vacuum down. Pants, things that don't wrinkle do really well in the under bed boxes. I went from a walking closet that would make about four of the closet I have now, that is how I solved my problem.

  • Weed out anything you can't live without. Store items like out of season shoes and clothes under the bed. If you have space in the bedroom, use dressers and highboys, roll t shirts to store. I have 2 highboys my dad made me when I was 19 and every drawer contains something to effectively use the closet space I have, including jewelry. Hats (I have a lot of hats - at least 75), in hatboxes. I have purses in xerox paper boxes. I purchased special hangers for all my hat scarves as well as regular scarves and shawls. I have sweaters and work out gear also stored in xerox paper boxes.

They always say if you haven't worn it in a year, give it away. Maybe you have some things goodwill could use?

Go seasonal. Use storage boxes under bed for out of season items.

Cull, purge, select, keep only what brings you joy, clean out, donate, send to mom's. I'm not kidding. What you get rid of, you won't have to find a place for.

On the closet bar, hang dresses, skirts, pants, and blouses. If there is no other place, hang your coats and jackets. For skirts and pants, buy some of the hangers that let you hang at least four. If you kept many of these, double hang them. Use cardboard boxes with lids or fancier plastic see through bins for all your foldable clothes that don't fit in drawers: sweaters, tshirts, sweatshirts, jeans, out of season items including boots, scarves, gloves, nightwear, underwear. Label and stack them up as if they are drawers in a dresser. If you are using boxes, cut the end off or make a flap so you can reach in the box without having to unstack it. I hope you were able to reduce the number of shoes you kept because they take up a lot of space. Buy the $1 shoe boxes from Dollar Tree and give each pair a transparent, labeled box, except for the shoes and house shoes you wear every day. If you master In hats, hang them from hooks going down the hall, using a double row if you have to. Same for scarves or purses. Otherwise, but them in another storage box.

Stretch your arm out from your chest. That's where hanging clothes should be. Bless you 😇

Down size. Sort to hang only and foldable . Seasonal, special use only, daily. Now look at each item. If it has not been used in a year or does not fit or you don't really like it . Donate or recycle. Remember nice suites or dresses could be given to women in crisis group. Don't keep it because you are going to change or lose .....! Purge it . Special item can't just get rid of it....then do something with it. Clean and store or turn into art, (quilt, wall display, ect.) But get it out of closet. Now the new closet look at it. If it confuses you get in a closet company. Or devide out items to seasonal storage (ceader cabinet in another room or area. ) If room is big enough get a clothes cabinet. To add storage area.

    Good luck.
