This is a quick, easy project that will add lots of fun to your 4th of July, Memorial Day or Flag Day celebration! All you need is a few pieces of 2x4 wood and some craft paint...and you are all set!
I made this project in less than an hour (including drying time!) and it turned out as cute as can be! Follow along and I will show you how to make one of your own!
As you can see, I used old scrap 2x4 pieces from my garage. They worked out great! You need two pieces cut to 7" long, and four pieces cut to 3 1/2 inches long. Sand all of the edges and flat surfaces to smooth any rough areas.
Next, using regular acrylic craft paint, paint two of the short pieces blue. Then paint one short and one long piece white, and one short and one long piece red. I like the look of wood stain on these, so I thinned my paint with a little bit of water to make it soak into the wood a little better. It gives a more transparent look like a stain.
next, using sandpaper, scuff all of the edges and flat surfaces as little or as much as you like to give them an aged, distressed look.
Finally, draw a star on the front of one of the blue blocks, and paint it white. When it dries, scuff it up with the sandpaper. Now, stack your blocks as shown in the picture, adding a bit of wood glue or hot glue between each block to hold them in place. When you add the blue blocks, you will see that they will not completely fill the area on top (behind the blue blocks), but that is fine. As you can see, it doesn't show from the front. Also, the blue blocks will be slightly higher than the red and white blocks. That is okay as well. It all adds to the rustic appeal. If you do not like this look, you could always cut them down at the beginning before you paint them. Once everything is in place and glued together, tie a cute piece of fabric or ribbon around them to dress them up!
I used white linen to match our beachy home decor, but you could use colored ribbon or burlap ribbon for a more rustic look if you prefer. These are perfect on your mantle, sofa table or even your dining room table for your holiday meals! For more crafty ideas, check out my blog at www.SeashellsAndSweetTea.com.
