Honestly, I do searches on pinterest and google alot. I also save stuff from the Hometalk emails. I find the more I look at diy projects, the more I can come up with my own ideas or a spin on other's ideas. They are like a springboard for my own imagination.
I can't speak for anyone else but me, but I always believed that "necessity is the Mother of Invention!" Almost anything can be made useful and beautiful with a little thought and creativity. And it's amazing what you can come up with when you need or want something you either can't afford or think is WAY overpriced! What better motivation!

I read design magazines, go on the internet to this site, DIY, Pinterest, etc. watch the DIY network on TV....that's just a few things I do.
