Not sure what it's called, but it's definitely a weed.

It's Poke weed, and toxic and invasive and very hard to get rid of. In the south it is boiled, three times over and eaten as a green. It has a very long root, so you will have to dig it out if you want it gone, or just lop it off and allow it to die this winter, just cut those seeds off and dispose of them where they can't grow.

Your plant is poke. Actually, I encourage it to grow in our garden, for the young leaves are a delicious (for those who like spinach) cooked green. I also can it for winter use. The young stalk can be sliced and fried like okra.

If you insist on getting rid of it, chop off the stalks as close to the ground as possible, and apply Tordon RTU, a product available at most garden stores, Home Depot or Lowe's. Tordon isn't a spray, you just dab it on the freshly cut stalk, and you won't have to deal with that plant ever again!

Thank you for info. I have some growing along the fence row that I have been trying to get rid of for years. I keep digging out, but one bit of root always remains and comes up again. I did not know you could eat the leaves and stalk. Good to know.

Be advised the leaves and stalks must be cooked to be edible.
