I have a few pocket doors and I love them. However, the studs in the wall have to be placed just so, so that there is room for the door to slide.

  • Needs to be evaluated as the framing is slightly different and there needs to be clearance in the wall itself without hitting the studs. Almost any door can be modified if you have skills to do so or the money to pay a contractor.

You can put it in any wall as long as there's enough room.

The wall needs to be slightly wider than the door. No permanent obstructions in the wall that can't be moved like plumbing. Electrical can be moved or eliminated. Drywall and studs will need to be removed so the "pocket" for the door can be place in the cavity.

I'm not @Mlbyfield, but I've been looking for this answer, too. In my whole house I only have one door I could convert to a pocket door, and it is near and perpendicular to an outer wall. I'm pretty sure with some help lifting, I could design and carry this out. But I'm more afraid of the slide at the top getting derailed. I have lived through so many bifold, louvered, and plastic slide doors that go off the rail and are not ever the same again. Any more advice for @Mlbyfield that I can eavesdrop on, too? Best wishes 😇

Pocket doors use a double side by side roller system to prevent any derailment. Check out the links and videos my next reply.
