Hello Janelle; I personally think that your Fireplace looks Beautiful!!!
Aside from that, Please contact Home Depot, Ace, Lowes. I know that there are products that can be used to paint over tile. Those Folks will be able to direct you to purchase exactly what is needed.
Also, I wished to mention that if you are just tired of the neutral color , you can easily change that by hanging on the top, and on either side of the Fireplace Fabric, or Pictures. You can do this very inexpensively, and also you can make this area of your Home shine, as it will be something that you Love and others will enjoy seeing something different.
Please trust your inner voice, and use whatever colors that you Love and Enjoy!
I hope that this helps you!! Take Care!
Janelle, I would paint the tiles a different color, and then stencil them with a design that you like (even if it is an all-over flowing type of design (for me that would be paisley or tie-dye effect, but then again, I'm an old hippie LOL).

I guess you could paint the tile . You would have to talk to the paint specialist at the store to find out what paint is best on tile that is also heat resistant .
why don't you stencil them : ) There are some really cool stencils in tile sizes.
I'm thinking to use wood planks on top of the tile to accent your wood trim.
you can buy decals that would look really cool or stencil on and paint them- i just saw a diy on this site of someone painting a stencil onto tile
hi you can buy marble look sheets that you can cover tiles and also use as splash back in kitchens you can buy in different sizes and cut down yourself I hope this is helpful.
I painted my tile gray, and then I stenciled it.
