Need suggestions on redoing 2very old china closets.

One was 2 separate pieces until about 45 years ago the legs were damaged from water ( burst pipes while my grandmother was away). She had the legs cut off on the top piece and cut down on the bottom piece. At the same time it was professionally painted in antique white. After all these years it is yellowed and worn and just plain dirty looking. Should I just repaint and what color or would it be easy to remove the old paint (only painted once) and go back to natural?
I cleaned it the best I could today and it still looks like this!!!

What a neat married piece. Do you have any idea of the type of wood each piece is made of? Since they were originally two different pieces of furniture they may not match. If you like stained wood it might be work sanding a bit on each piece to see what you have underneath if you don't already know. If they don't match, I'd lightly sand them and repaint using a different color for back of the top piece.

Unfortunately I don't know my woods. Here is a picture of the inside of the drawer which wasn't painted, maybe you can tell me.

The best I can do is what I wrote above@Donnalee.
  • I am a big fan of natural/stained wood but I think this piece would look spectacular painted. And I can see it painted a lighter color on top and dark on the bottom with a dark glaze over all of it and using another darker color to paint out the embellishments on the pieces and spray painting the handles/hardware to update and help with the facelift. I would also think about mirrors on the back to help reflect light for display or paint it a contrasting color to give some POP to the piece. Are the pieces in it the pieces you going to display? If so then work with one of the colors in the china for the background color. That would make your dishes come alive. Good luck

I don't know if you have a place for it, but that top part would be wonderful to attach to the wall like a cabinet! (Just another idea.) I would paint this. Actually, the design is quite pretty!

Is it going to stay in the room where you photographed it? Is that a wood wall in the background? If it is staying there, I'd definitely paint it. A wood wall with wood furniture against it may become overwhelmingly dark - you need contrast to show off that lovely china cabinet/buffet. What other colors are in that room? Are you updating anything else? I'd suggest browsing through other posts and find pieces that speak to you. Depending on your personal style, your furniture would look great in duck-egg blue, mossy green, bright turquoise, sunny yellow or any of the neutrals - either grays, taupes or ivories. If you become ambitious, you can sand/strip the paint off the top of the buffet and stain it, while painting the rest. So many posts of similar projects here - get creative with it and post your progress! Good Luck!

I would paint the top and bottom with a chalk paint maybe French Linen with Old White on the drawers. I would stain the top of the bottom piece with a dark stain. Then apply wax to the chalk painted areas and finish off with dark wax to antique it a bit. It would look fabulous

I would take Teresa from Montgomery, Al. advice. The two pieces married together are beautiful. Please send pictures when you update it. Trust me you will really love it. Good luck.

Grandma was one smart cookie to put those pieces together. I would paint it all one beautiful color. Favor the linen color however, close to original. Love it!

May I suggest painting the inside china cabinet a light mint or sky blue to make the china POP! Paint the cabinets a white Chalk Paint and ENJOY!!!!
