Hello my fellow Hometalkers! I am in need of help. I need all of your thinking caps put on!
As you can tell from the pictures I've attached, I have a huge headboard/ wall unit piece that goes with the bedroom set. Bought it a loooong time ago from Thomasville. The rest of my house has been updated except for my master bedroom. It's in excellent condition. It's just too big! It's strongly made and I hate to get rid of it, if something can be done.
I'm usually good at envisioning new transformations, but this one...I am stuck! I've looked online and just can not find anything that can give me inspiration.
I am open to your advice and ideas!! I am open to ideas of cutting it, reshaping it, painting it, etc....
Please excuse the large dog crate in the corner. We have a 6 month old great dane puppy who can not be trusted as of yet when I leave the house. He's a big boy and can do some major damage if left unattended. It won't be for too much longer that he will fit in it. He's already weighing in at 98 pounds. His father is 225 pounds and his mom is 190...so I am probably looking at 200 lbs when he's fully grown.
How much of this do you need? If you need the storage space keep the 2 end pieces and push them together. If you need the headboard I would remove the mirrors and hang something else over it.....possibly family pictures. If you want the whole thing with a new look I would remove the mirrors and do something else in that space.........pictures or tapestry or ???
Oh wow that is a fantastic piece! I would paint it. If you are tired of the mirrors, remove them and replace with some DIY art. I am drooloing over all that extra storage . . .
the piece is in 3 parts....the side pieces can be relocated to mud room, tv room. Basement...great storage. My set like this has shelves where the mirror is. You might have room for a flat screen tv.
I would definitely keep the 2 big storage ends, even if I stuck them in the garage for extra storage, or the laundry room.
Looks like it would come apart easily....isn't the bridge screwed on to the storage pieces? and the mirror screwed on to the bridge? Also looks like the headboard is screwed on also. Anyway, without seeing the rest of your room, put the storage pieces together or put one in your guest room and one in another room. Failing all else, can you just take down the mirrors, paint the space where they were the same colors as the wall and hang some artwork there?
If you are tired of all of the wood, take the doors off and use as open shelves. You can also paint a lighter color. Keep it simple, lines of furniture do not lend themselves to shabby chic or overdone finishes. Go to Houzz.com and look for ideas - lots of them with bookcases and painted finishes.
I would remove the headboard section and the mirrors. Place the bed against the wall. Hang a nice, large piece if art of your choosing, attach a swing arm lamp to each side for light and reading. In addition, I would remove the doors on each cabinet to display books, family pictures and other treasures. Painting optional, only if you are tired of the wood look.

I love DFM's idea about making the middle piece into an entertainment center. But don't be too quick to discard the mirrors entirely.
If you & your SO tend to dress in a particular spot every day, consider wall-mounting the mirrors to cement the idea of dressing areas. 2 mirror in a corner give you a multi-view configuration if you prefer.
Honestly though, I would probably pick up a couple of 4"×4" posts, get them precut at the hardware store, & then put in corner notches at 2 different heights. Those mirrors can easily become a gorgeous accent table for displaying your favorite knick-knacks and oddities.
Sorry the photo just didn't come up for some reason!! I would paint it with chalk paint by Anne Sloan and add handles but take the bed out and add a vanity, desk etc and add recess light in the vanity area. Or another thought is in basement add big flat screen tv and omit the mirror but what ever location you use it for I would still paint it So it's not date Time piece.
I have this same unit! My husband bought it about 25 years ago. We wanted to replace the bridge to king size but was told they didn't make it anymore. We've moved it a couple of times, my husband said the screws holding it together were getting worn out so I'm concerned about taking it apart again if I ever move. Also, it is extremely heavy, solid oak. Good luck with it, I would think painting it would help.
if you need extra closet space you could take the bed portion and mirrors out. build a custom section in the middle hanging rods, shoes drawers etc and paint the whole thing a nice color.
You have gotten some good ideas for rearranging and redoing it with paint but it is a 1980s style and really no matter what you do to it , the thing will be very outdated and you will still have bulky and heavy looking pieces in there....My suggestion is, if you have updated the rest of the house, why not just pitch this whole thing and get yourselves a beautiful modern headboard? If you have a consignment place near you maybe they could pick it up and sell it for you for a little bit of money, or you could possibly donate to a pickup charity ...you will never have to lift or move this piece ever again, and your bedroom will match the rest of your house in the updated look!
Get a couple of real nice end tables with the new headboard and you can create a whole new light look in the room...
I really appreciate everyone who gave me their suggestions/ideas. I am going to give some of them a try. I'll try dismantling the headboard and not use the centerpiece mirror, bridge and lower shelves. I'll move the two end cabinets. Not sure where exactly they can go just yet. (I don't have a basement, I live in South Florida) But, I won't know until I give it a try. And if I like the new placement, then I chalk paint it an antique white. If I don't like and it doesn't work , I donate the entire set and purchase something new.

Could put sliding door over mirror barn door style. Large storage unit
I would remove the bed from the unit, then use Anne Sloan chalk white paint. Then add hardware Long on top and pulls On the drawers. Add a vanity/desk with over head spot lights. Unless you have a man cave use it to place a flat screen tv an still paint it and add the handles.
This piece is so gorgeous. Have you thought of using it in a room for an office? You could paint the mirrors as chalkboards. If the office is large enough, you could add a bed. Then, you could buy or DIY a new headboard. I like the idea of using them in the laundry room. The two end pieces are what I want to use in my laundry room instead of having something made from scratch. So many things you can do with those 3 pieces. You have gotten so many wonderful ideas in how to use these pieces. You are right.....it is hard to find and too expensive to replace the quality set you have. If you paint the set, you won't see the set as it was. It will be as if you bought new furniture. Only the best and yours as seek to make the decision that is right for y'all.
If you have the space, and since the bed is not attached, why not turn it into an awesome office or crafting space?? You could add some lighting over the mirrors or add sconces to the side panels, change the mirrors (or remove them and replace them) to a ribbon message board, chalkboard, whiteboard, magnetic board, or corkboard (or any combination thereof).
If the front cabinet doors doors don't fold down into a nice desktop, then you could add a piece of mdf or something to extend your workspace. You could always drill small holes in the back for any computer or lighting cords.
You've got all that lovely storage space for any and all of your office or crafting needs, and you can paint the whole thing to give it a fresh updated look--just add a chair and you're all set!
I have this exact piece of furniture but a little darker and it has an oriental motif on the doors. It used to be in our Master but it is not in a large guest room. I am thinking of updating it too. It has so much storage which I love.
Furniture of that quality is hard to find, now everything is MDF or veneer. Can separate all and use individually and/ or refinish using newer stains.
