Yes. I've removed popcorn ceilings myself, with warm water and scraping off. Did 4 rooms in a matter of a couple hrs. But, as long as you can still find the framing boards to attach the bead board to, you're good. Just use a longer screw, as you will be going through the popcorn and drywall on the ceiling.
