@Regina. It's hard to tell if this is a full size door but I think it is. I can't give you a patch tutorial because this is a big hole. I can make a few conversion ideas.
1. Sand around the edges. Place strips of wide duct tape over the hole. Mount a big poster or print on the door, making sure the hole is covered.
2. Find a small shelf unit or narrow wooden box, about 2' x 3'. Cut out a hole just slightly smaller than the actual box, with the big hole behind and at the lower edge of where the box will be. Try to get a shallow box, but let it stick out if needed. Just glue well. Glue the box into the big hole using Gorilla Glue or something else as strong. Prop the box in place until it is dry. Paint the box, or the whole door, let it dry. Put one or more items in display in the box, like a wreath, base with silk flowers, a superhero, photos, a trophy. Use Gorilla Glue or mounting clay or hot glue to hold the items in place, temporarily or permanently.
3. Duct tape the hole in straight long strips, horizontally. Tape the rest of the door in parallel strips. (Tape off the handle so it won't get paint on it.) Paint the whole door. You should get an effect something like shiplap.
4. If possible, have the person who broke the door pay for a new door, paint, and any other repairs. Go for a solid wood door if you can.
You can get a new door slab for around $30, if you have the tools to cut the hole for the knob. It is possible to repair this door, if I am seeing correctly there are wood supports in this door. You would have to cut a square, buy a piece of luan, probably 1/4 inch thick, but check. Use glue on the supports and brads to tack it. Get some wood filler and fill any gaps around the patch, sand, repeat if necessary, then paint. Easier and cheaper to just get the door. Some home centers may be able to cut the hole for the knob, if you measure accurately.
Repaint the door, then find a wood cut out at a craft store that will cover the hole with some to spare. Paint the cutout the same color as the door. Clean up the edges of the hole and position the cutout over the hole and glue in place.
looks like wood inside, I would cut and glue a small piece of plywood inside the wood . Get rid of the bad wood on the outside, sand smooth. get patch fix from the hardware store and spackle and a trowl and apply spackle, let it dry sand till smooth and does not show, may take a few applications
I agree with Cook_w, It looks like it might be a little more than I would want to deal with, there is an awful lot of splintering. Either replace the door, or find a lightweight poster frame and find a poster or piece of fabric that you could put in the frame and hang it over the hole.
I would cut a neat square around the hole, then glue in some wood braces (1" trim stock) so the edges give you something to glue the patch too. Then cut a square of thin veneer the size of the hole, glue it using carpenters glue to your braces and tape in place till dry. Then use wood filler to fill in the edges. sand and paint.

If this is an interior door, it would be less trouble to just replace it with a new one.

Not that big of a hole. They meant about the size of a door knob, not someone's head.

Time to cover the door with framed art work, a mirror or perhaps a wallpaper with a frame around the edge. Time to think outside the box.
Purchase an inexpensive mirror and trim out.
