Bookworms and even casual readers want a special space or corner in their homes to arrange and store their precious books. Are you a voracious reader yourself? I am pretty sure you have myriads of books that you need to sort out as they are now piling on your floors. Books have to be stored properly if you want to preserve them.

There are many different styles of bookshelves and many different types of design, as well. In this article, we will feature some of the most creative bookshelf ideas that you'll be able to take inspiration from. Are you on a budget? Don't fret. These concepts are not just ingenious but they are also cheap to recreate.

Skateboards

Do you have old skateboards lying around the house? Why not use them as bookshelves? They are statement pieces that will leave guests and visitors at awe with your creativity. Aside from books, you can store your old game cartridges of Tony Hawk, punk CDs, and first aid kits on these skateboards slash shelves.

Ladders and Boards

In our search for interesting bookshelf ideas, we were a little underwhelmed. The original concept presented by many other DIYers and bloggers is essentially a ladder that has shelves which are supported by ladder rungs. What we weren’t sold on was the fact that it looks cluttered and messy. What's more, it takes up a lot of valuable space. The version that we have for you, however, is such a huge improvement to the idea we just mentioned. It is still going to make clever use of a ladder but it is now mounted on the wall upside down. This solves the problem of the bookshelf being all over the place. Depending on your sourcing of materials, creating this ladder bookshelf version is cheap, simple, and elegant.

Boards and Bricks

This DIY bookshelf idea is a classic. You can support the shelves using bricks, blocks of wood, cinder blocks, or even other books. A bookshelf made of boards and bricks can be made into an elegant or rustic one. Choose what will suit your home or your room's overall design. The design will also depend on what raw materials you use. Make a set of shelves if you want to impress someone with your DIY handyman skills. Now, your significant other can have the books supported well enough.

Bottles and Boards

This is an interesting twist on the theme, Boards and Bricks. For this, just replace the bricks with bottles. It may need a bit more handiwork such as drilling and measuring. And it will certainly require more bottles than bricks. Make sure they’re all roughly the same height and durable.

Ropes and Boards

Most bookshelves are resting comfortably on floors and walls. This unique idea that we have dangles them from your ceiling. To ensure that your books are secured whenever you look into them, add some tension to the ropes you are using. This will keep the jostling around to a minimum. Otherwise enjoy your very unique ceiling mounted bookshelf.

Binder Clips and Boxes

Stacks of wooden boxes in complementary sizes can be made into bookshelves. Hold them together using common binder clips. Do you want to make it more awesome than it already is? Cut handholds in both sides. Now it’s an easily transportable bookshelf for on the go readers.

Wooden Boxes

If you are stacking plywood boxes that contain your books, why not mount them against walls? You will only need binder clips to hold them together. You can arrange them any way you like. Make a pseudo-staircase out of them, like something from Mario Bros. Or craft a veritable castle made from books.

Old Dresser Drawers

In yard sales and thrift stores, you can’t miss drawers that are up for sale. Purchase one and repurpose it into a box that you can mount on your wall to serve as a bookshelf. If the space allows, buy three drawers and line them up. These work especially well for children’s books and in playrooms.

Cardboard Boxes

A pack of four stackable cardboard boxes can be used as a bookcase/shelf.  It is simple to make but if you are looking for a challenge and you would want to do a bit more work, design your own version by using thin plywood. This will allow greater customization and design.

Pipes

Use copper pipes to hold up your precious books! It looks cool, it serves its function, and there’s no better way to add a unique feel to your room. As a bonus, copper is already a green, recycled material, so there’s no shame in upcycling it!
