How do I repair pin tucking on external brickwork?

Question

I own a Heritage listed Queen Anne Federation home and would love to be able to repair the white lines along the mortar joins on the red brick walls. (I've been told it's called pin tucking ). I've had a professional quote me and it was so expensive that it's not an option. I'm not afraid of hard work or getting dirty!!

I think you mean'tuck pointing' . Usually done with a piping bag

I found this link that explains the how to very well. I would check with the historical society about the sealant, just in case it is not allowed for a period home.

I know it as 'pointing'. Done right, you use a stiff wire brush and knock out loose mortar and clean the surface. Then trowel in fresh mortar and press it in well, re-forming the smooth outer surface. It is a slow, tedious process, but you only have to do it once or twice a century, if done right.
