We had a company quote a 5,000.00 fix for our home that has a level 4-5 and have seen contradictory articles on whether it truly is a valid health concern

If you're planning on selling your home, different states have varying rules on acceptable radon levels and most require a radon test performed before a sale can go through. Don't know how valid the health concern it is, but it may be a sale maker/breaker. We had to have radon remediation prior to a sale, then have proof of it being done by a licensed professional and that the re-test came in at acceptable levels. It was a one story ranch, full basement and attic. Can't recall exact cost, but was about $3,000.

Radon gas can cause lung cancer. I have heard it to be the number 1 cause of lung cancer out side of smoking. It comes from decaying uranium.

  • Hire a licensed indepent testing company - that way you can be certain they are not trying to sell you something you may or may not need. Radon has been known to cause cancer. If levels are unacceptable, I would get bids from several companies for remediation plans.

Radon gas is definitely a serious concern IF you have it in your home! It can be lethal. Do your own research on this, though. An educated consumer who knows the facts isn't easily going to fall prey to a scam-outfit. Here's something I just gleaned from a Google search to get you started. Best of luck!

True, radon gas can cause cancer. Long-term exposure to radon can lead to lung cancer, the only cancer proven to be associated with inhaling radon. Testing is the only way to know if a person’s home has elevated radon levels.
