    Use a non-toxic striper as Citristrip and then decide if you want to re-stain or paint.

    sand them with a rough sand paper and then paint them with kilz then the color of your choice

    I agree I hate them. You have a few options. First paint them now matter what else you do to eliminate the stain. Next you can remove the slats and replace them with fabric, mirror, glass, wood, plexi anything flat and no thicker then the actual door. Removing the slats updates the look and the dusting of them.

    If they are wood, you may need to use a primer to cover up the surface before using paint(especially if it is an old-based stain). After that, your imagination is the only limit to the colors you can use! Have fun!

    You can roughly sand them and then paint. You can also add a thin trim to them. It will really dress them up.
