How to re-purpose a table base after a friend broke the glass top.
Here was the table before a friend and her husband decided to move it. Pretty typical stuff.
The glass got broke, so they decided to replace the whole table and gave me the base. It was faded from years outdoors. It was still too big for my intended use. Thankfully it only weighted about 10# - if that.
wear safety glasses!
using my angle grinder, I cut off the arms until I was happy with the size. I made a cut on each 'arm', then put a flattened cardboard box on top to check the size. I ended up cutting the arms down to 1/2" long. Since this was my outdoor coffee space, I painted the base Rustoleum Kona Brown
I wanted the max size of my table to be 30" x 30" so I bought 2 8' pieces of 5/4 cedar deck lumber (true 1" thick) which gave me 192" of working material, so I didn't have to worry about the saw kerf, and added a 10° angle just for looks.
Unfinished deck cedar on painted base
I made a simple top with the deck lumber and rounded the edges. (I'll cover the top details in another post). A 2" hole saw for my umbrella did the trick. I sat in my fave chair and tried the height. I ended up cutting off 4" of the legs so my arm could reach the table top easily while using the arm rest.
I added two coats of Minwax outdoor polyurethane for shine. Here it is at dusk just the other night ( search for my post to see how I did the solar deck lighting )
Suggested materials:
  • 5/4 x 8' deck board ($12 ea)   (Lowe's)
  • Rustoleum Kona Spray Paint ($4)   (Walmart)
  • Minwax Outdoor Polyurethane clear ($16)   (Home Depot)
