Any ideas for a Fan filter?

I use a fan behind my wood stove to help spread the heat. I am using a flexible filter that I cut to place on the suction side, and hold it with rubber bands. It works ok but there MUST be a better way to filter out the ashes and dust without the leaks that occur all around the above idea. Any ideas for a filter????

I used a wood stove to heat my former house for years. If you are getting dust and ashes while you have a fire, the seal around the door is not tight. You can buy cording (asbestos?) to replace what is there. While doing that, check the chimney stack to make sure each section is sealed.

If you are cleaning the fire box while the fan is running, I'd say turn the fan off while cleaning.

I KNOW all that, its just when blowing the heat around that it picks up dust

  • I would check with the manufacturer of your wood stove first. Check their website.

I will try to make it clearer. I have made NO modifications to the stove and have used it 11 years. It does have its own small fan, that blows across the top of the stove to increase the heat moving around. I bought a second regular household fan that sits on the floor behind the stove pointing up along the smoke pipe to capture extra heat from it. It is this fan that I am discussing. Has NOTHING to do with the stove. Ps, I am an engineer.

This filter is rigid, won't work at all, I must not be making it clear. I could build a wooden frame to set the fan in, THEN use something like this or for that matter ANY furnace filter, but the space behind the stove will not permit it, not enough room. Also wood would be to close to the fire box.

I have used a box-fan and 4 20X20 pleated, paper filters, duct taped together to form a filter box on the intake side. It's rather large but it really works

It may sound and look crazy, but pantyhose could work
