Ants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Help!

Is anyone else having a problem with sugar ants in the house? They keep marching along my counter tops and I don't know what to do! I have sprayed around the door and windows but I have no idea how to get rid of them! My kitchen is spotless and there is no open food anywhere!! So when I see the parade beginning I spray them with Windex as I don't want bug sprays around the dogs and all over the counter tops. Please advise .Thanks!

You have to remove the source of why they are coming into your house. Spraying inside is temporary as they are coming in from outside. Caulk every crack outside. Remove any old brush, leaves, etc, if you have shrubbery against the house. Then inside, you have to keep it extra clean so they don't/can't find any food...Bleach water works well and is cheap.

Oh, I know just how you feel! Each summer I deal with them also, this they seem even bigger than normal... fortunately, I've found peppermint oil and dried peppermint to be an effective repellent. I mix a solution of about 20 drops of essential peppermint oil to 2 cups of water and spray it wherever see the little things marching. I do this 2 times a day until I'm sure they are gone. I also sprinkle dried peppermint leaves near entryways, and in the garage and by my garbage cans. This has been working well for me, I hope it helps you too. Good luck!

Make your own bait! It gets carried back to the nest and kills the queen. Soak a cotton ball in the following solution and place in the middle of the "line" near wear they come in.

    Ant Bait

    1 1/2 Cups warm water

    1 1/2 TBSP Borax

    mix well

    add 1/2 Cup sugar

    mix well

    Store in airtight container

You need to keep this out of the reach of childre & pets as it is toxic. If you need, you can put the cotton ball in a small plastic container with a few ant sized holes drilled in the bottom sides.

Sprinkle cayenne pepper around. Not very pretty, but works great. My mom had ants all over her kitchen and I had read about this, so we tried it. We left it inside the cabinets and on her counter tops for about a week and they left and never came back. Just sprinkle a little here and there.

    Good Luck,

    Jo

I had a problem with protein ants, and a friend brought me something called Zap-A-Roach, which is 100% boric acid. I put a little canned cat food in an empty water bottle lid, and set it in the middle of the powder. After 2 days, the ants were gone. The label says it kills roaches, water bugs. fleas, ants, and silverfish. I know boric acid can be purchased in small amounts. Good luck!

Use this recipe (from Organic Gardening). 2 cups water, 6 Tbsp sugar and 1 tsp boric acid powder. Boric acid powder is available cheaply at most pharmacies. Place enough liquid in an old margarine tub or yogurt container to cover the bottom at least 1/4 inch. Add a couple of cotton balls. If placing outside, put the top on and cut slits in the lid. Set these out as traps. I put mine on the counter and the ants congregated and drank for two days and then NO ANTS. They take the bait to the nest and it wipes out the nest. This is less potent than the commercial baits who use the same type ingredients but that is why it works since ants don't detect the poison until the nest is gone.

  • I use packaged cornbread mix that says it is sweetened and put it where they are. They will take it to the mound, everyone will eat it and die, they can't digest the cornmeal, but will take it because it is sweetened. Little goes a long way.

I read this from : Itsmemic

Medicated powder from the Dollar Tree. It has eucalyptus in it...menthol...I puff it around my homes foundation..and inside under my birdcages in the cracks under moldings. Work immediately and they never come back. I do this at the first sign of ants..in one day..GONE. The powder is in a very large container and lasts quite awhile too !! And smells great !

Not toxic to my birds OR dog

What if you make a barrier around the house.

I did some research, since we know what works for one person doesn't always work for another. I found this site and it's pretty informative. I know some tips you may not be able to use but there are some good ones also that will hopefully help.

Ants are so weird. One time I found them inside the freezer in the garage!! What would possess them to go inside a freezer only to die? They must have sent signals back or something ~ there were no ant trails only a freezer full of dead ants. Hasn't happened since.
