Custom Closet Makeover on a DIY Budget

As a lover of clothes, I need a well organized closet. It's important to be able to find what you want to wear.
The basic shelf with a hanging bar doesn't provide enough storage, but custom closet systems can be really expensive. So, I designed my own closet makeover using inexpensive furniture from Ikea, and a few reused pieces.
Here's how I did it, for less than $350. Anyone can steal these ideas to create your own dream closet!
BEFORE: The basic closet generally has a top shelf and a single bar for hanging clothes. It's tough to make efficient use of that space. It needs shelves and drawers!
AFTER: Two sets of cubbies on either end of the closet anchor the raised top shelf. The single bar for hanging was cut into three pieces, to more efficiently use the space. Extra shelves were added for shoes and boots. A set of drawers is perfect for smaller folded items.
The existing bar was cut into three pieces. I purchased brackets to allow me to hang the new rods where I wanted. On one side of the closet, I have two stacked bars for hanging shorter items like shirts and skirts.
On the other side of the closet, a single hanging bar allows room for longer items such as dresses. Beneath is a set of shelves for boots.
I use the drawers for organizing items such as undergarmets, t-shirts, and athletic wear. My favorite way to store t-shirts is standing on end, held up with bookends. This lets me easily find the one I want, without having to dig through a pile.
And there you have it! My beautifully organized closet for under $350. You can also use furniture pieces you already have, such as a dresser or cubbies. You can have a well organized closet without spending a ton of money.

Thanks for the inspiration!! Just what I was looking for. You must be so happy! If you pick up a couple of those white plastic curtain rod covers that you cut to size ($1.00 last time I bought them at home depot, etc) and paint the hardware and shelf to match the cubbies, it would look totally custom! Would love to see a photo of your "book-ended T-shirts"!!!
