Drain Problem-Anyone know what should be done?

When my washing machine empties the water backs up slightly in my kitchen sink but not in the bathtub, bathroom sink or toilet that are lower. Everything is on one floor. It is worth noting that an AC condenser pump and the washer empty into the same drain pipe in the utility room, but there is only a small amount of condensate pumped down the pipe at any given time. If I stop the washer midcycle when pumping out, the water does not come up the sink. Anyone know what should be done before calling a plumber?

try running a plumber snake thru your drains

Have done that with a manual 10' snake, but no improvement. But that is always a good first step.

I agree with Linda! Snake out the drain. You will more likely have to remove the sink P Trap to do it. Also suggest to snake out the drain pipe in the utility room.

Sounds like there is a clog somewhere. If you have the manual for the washing machine you can check there to see if there is any information on you problem and if not contact the company. Other than that, you probably need to contact a plumer for assessment.

You can pour baking soda over the plogged drain then pour white vinegar on top until it stop "fizzing". Run HOT water down the drain. The mixture dissolves biologic debris such as hair, soap scum, etc. You may have to do this several times.

I maintain the kitchen and bathroom drains with this method every month. It must be something beyond the trap, perhaps the vent.

We were renting a drain snake at least twice a year for our washer and a plumber said, just pour cloryx down the washer drain every month.....at least a quart or more. We did not have any trouble after that. We have now switched to a front load washer which takes much less water but I still pour cloryx down the drain periodically.

I would go to the hardware store and get a bottle of the natural powdered Robotic Drain Cleaner and a bottle of the Root Killer. Add warm water to the powdered Drain Cleaner and pour in before bedtime, let sit overnight, run hot water in morning. Then use the root killer the next night. Works for me.

Am going to try this. We have only one tree in the backyard and it's hard to imagine its roots anywhere near the drain, but who knows. In our other house that was surrounded with very mature trees the plumber suggested we flush a 1/4 c. or copper sulfate (pretty blue crystals) down the toilet every couple of weeks to keep the pipes clear. It worked.

Also check the vent pipe on the roof for the sink. Sometimes they can get clogged by leaves, birds or critters. The bathtub, bath sink, and toilet have a separate vent pipe by plumbing codes. I have cleared man vent pipes in my day. Most of the time I ran a garden hose down the vent pipe.

Thank you, William. I will give this a try. It is noteworthy that the bathroom drains have not been involved at all, so this makes considerable sense.
