When we purchased our house our back porch was in pretty bad shape. It was basically unsafe to walk across and it went unused for a year. Eventually my dad came up and helped us tear apart the existing porch to make way for a new one. We took all the rotting and cut apart floorboards off, relocated some joists so the porch connected to the garage, laid composite decking, and built railings that serve as planter boxes and extra seating.

This is what it looked like when we moved in, pretty rough! We tore all the boards off and used the joists. We also had to dig underneath the porch to make sure there was a slope leading away from our house.
This is the finished porch where we laid composite decking and built planter boxes that serve as benches as well.
Suggested materials:
  • Composite decking   (lumber yard)
