Antoinette, my husband and down-sized and moved into a 2000' brand new ranch. First we had our three kids go through and take what they wanted, then we had an estate sale, keeping the pieces we wanted to take with us. It's a job, but well worth it. We moved to a small agricultural town not far from the big city, and we love it.

  • I would like to help you but I am not sure what your question is

Decide what you want to keep, and get rid of the rest. If you are planning on moving, think in terms of how much space you will have. I am currently downsizing in place, not planning on moving anytime soon. I don't want my children to have to deal with the accumulation of over 35 years in the same house. I joined online declutter groups on Facebook (it helps having declutter buddies), and every day I work on something, even if it is only the bathroom drawers, or a closet. I've made numerous donations, given stuff to my kids that they wanted, found things I had forgotten I owned. I have some collector pieces that the kids aren't interested in that I plan to also downsize so someone else enjoys them. My one daughter dislikes dolls (she thinks they are creepy) so my antique dolls will need to be manageable and easy to sell when the time comes, or hundreds of dollars worth of my collection will get tossed. What we value often isn't of value to our children I've learned. I'm not worried about my Depression glass because all of my daughters love it, so I'll keep it and give it to them as time goes on. If you have valuable antiques, I would get them appraised. It seems overwhelming at times, downsizing, but, it also feels like life is easier as you minimize what you have, from my experience.

Hello Antoinette; Please do not be overwhelmed at what you are going to do!!!

I would advise you to take your time. Go through your home slowly.

    Make lists on a pad.

Decide on what you want to keep, and what you want to get rid of.

If you have Family, you can offer to let them take what they want.

If not, You can sell, or donate what you decide that you no longer need, or want to keep.

If you feel scared or are overwhelmed, Please ask a Friend of Family member to help you!!!! You can turn this into a fun time by having drinks and food.

If you have items that are worth money such as Antiques, and you no longer want them, You can sell them on several sites. EBay is one. Craig's List is another.

You can also have a Yard Sale. I have sold several expensive Antiques in a Yard Sale!!!

If you have any Antiques, and are not sure of prices, Please contact me and show me Photos. I can give you actuate prices!!!

I hope that this helps you!!! Take Care!

As a professional organizer, questions, do you live alone in the home or live with family? What size home are you wanting to downsize to, get three bins and label Keep, throw, donate, my rule of thumb if you have not touch it, use it or worn it goes immediately. Antiques have them appraise and keep a few of your favorite. Paper and more paper, get a bin, shred all paper instead of throwing into trash prevents identify theft. Questions if it is just you, do you really need 6 sets of bed sheets or 3 blenders, the goal is getting rid of stuff, knickknacks /collections, pair down again do you need 13 teapots, these are just examples. Use all this information to help you purge each room and closets and cupboards. Create a list, tackle one room per day, this way you stay focus and not scatter, have a bottle of water with you, there are lots of professional organizers available to help. I live in a 735 sq feet home and live simple, two sets of bedding, two pots and Sautee pan, I don't have shelves of stuff, also think of the time and energy you spend cleaning, my goal for me was minimize cleaning, I don't have surface stuff to move to dust , less cleaning means more time for you and the important things in your life. It may be great to have friends and family to help, but really it could be more work as they can't do the sorting out stuff without your presence. Check out www.napo.net for a list of organizers in your area. Best of luck!
