Need a new top?

Upon stripping the top of cabinet we will make into a wine bar, we discovered its made of particle board that has gotten wet and will be impossible to sand and paint for a smooth finish. So, we are looking for another "material" to disguise its imperfections. It measures 18 x 50. Any suggestions?

Sharing a picture of the cabinet would help. A "cabinet" brings many images into my head. To do so all you have to do is click on the Add Photos in blue under the reply box. Find the folder you saved the photo to and click on it. Hometalk will automatically resize it for you. Without that all I can think of is removing it and replacing it with either plywood or MDF.

@Kim And Lori you sound like me, always having more than one project going at any given time.

Lots of options here - mosaics made from ceramic tile or broken china, composition board with the edges finished with molding or edging, regular tiles installed right over the particle board since the grout will level the surface. I think tile of any type would be your best bet since you might have to mop up spilled wine and good tile doesn't stain.

I like this idea, will have to try it first in a smaller piece as we haven't tiled before. Thank you so much for your tips.

A piece of glass cut to fit would work too - you can paint (or 'frost') the bottom side or use fabric, textured wallpaper or aluminum foil under it to create a cool look. Then use those little clear rubber feet on the corners and edges of the glass to prevent it from sliding around.

The foil tip is wonderful, we are talking about metal flashing: similar look doing some research on costs now. Glass is expensive and our goal is to turn this cabinet around at very little cost. We are having fun transforming this cabinet found for free on the side of the road.

@Kim And Lori I just saw a door mirror at the thrift store for $5 - the size was about 18" x 48"… wondering if something like that would work? Do you have a Habitat for Humanity nearby? They always have cheap neat stuff… The metal flashing sounds cool too! Post an update when you decide what you are going to use :)
