Still have the piece - Stick it back with wood glue and wood fill, rub down and re finish to match existing. Otherwise, cut new wood to fit and use same method.

thank you! Our brother in law was saying we had to reframe the whole door way! Like your fix better!

Do you really need to fix this? I'm not sure i understand the photo.. is this a structural problem that affects the use of the door? or just a messy area that you want to cover up?

I'm not sure if it's structural or not. We thought it was a small strip of wood but it is actual door frame I believe.

Thank you . Sounds much better than reframing the whole door!

I have managed to tear off the decorative wood around 4 doors in my house (my electric wheelchair is a very efficient demolition device) We have gone the simplest route of purchasing trim from large box stores, stain to match existing trim and replace the entire door trim so there is not a glued or patched look. Took less than 1 hr including the shopping trip! Just measure twice, cut once!

I vote for just a superficial cover up . It would not be worth it to me to take the whole thing apart! Maybe some white paint ?

You may have painted already, but you coud also fill it with white caulk, which should be easy enough to remove. But you might forget what you did. After a few trouble free years the memory fades, and it is hard to write it down where you might see it. If someone else in the future decides to work on this area they might be confused if you caulk. In either case if not a structural problem ....I'm glad you like the idea of paint. :)
