Measure the depth of the hole by putting a toothpick into it, mark the length, cut the toothpick to length, and drop it in the hole. The screw will fit tighter as it "bites" into the toothpick. You may be able to fit 2 toothpicks; you have to experiment.

Golf tees work great for this also.

We usually use wooden matches with the heads broken off. Just use your hammer to pound them into the screw hole.

Golf tees, wooden matches, wood skewers, toothpicks. Put a dab of glue on before inserting into the hole so it doesn't pop out.

Fill the holes with slivers of wood.

All of the above are good, additional choices are drill hole and insert wooden dowel sized to fit the hole with wood glue, either sink dowel to surface or cut off flush. Oversized screws are good if they are close to the size of the hole.
