This video tutorial is a demonstration of how to achieve a modern farmhouse look using a DIY wood distressing paint technique. It can also be used on wood projects with a shabby chic, French country, mid century modern and traditional style.
Step 1: Watch the video tutorial for a step by step demonstration for a gorgeous modern farmhouse finish that works well in most home designs.

Step 2: Coat with your favorite paint. We used General Finishes Milk Paint but you can also use chalk paint or a cheap flat paint from your local hardware store. The best paint for this has a flat sheen.

We used white as the first coat and green as the second coat. You will expose the wood and the first layer so choose your colors with the style you wish to have.

We chose white and green for demonstration purpose for a high contrast so you can see the colors exposed.

In our finished product we chose white with light grey on top to fit in with a French country styled home.
Step 3: Use a 320 sand paper and sand the entire surface with a light scuff.
Step 4: "Burn" the edges. Make some unique character in the wood by creating fisheyes and use your creativity to expose the wood grain and the first layer. You should be able to see the wood and white first coat.
Final project: First layer is white, second layer is light grey on top of wood.
Gorgeous elevated finish that compliments many styles including modern farmhouse, shabby chic, French country, mid century modern and traditional. Enjoy this easy paint technique on top of our other signature distressed finishes.

Enjoy these painting and finishing techniques! Get creative and have fun!
