I asked this same question at HomeDepot and Sherwin Wms - it's doable, but very time consuming having to prep the floor before painting and depends on the level of traffic the floor will have to survive. Are you sure you want to tackle this and not just replace with something else? What's underneath?

Might work for bathrooms but thinking of pulling up vinyl in kitchen and going the polished cement route!

Lisa, I tried to paint my kitchen floor old vinyl tiles (from 1980) I primed and painted with floor paint. It does not last long, every 3 months I was painting again. I had to replace the floor.

Lisa, I painted my linoleum in my bathroom! I love it. It has held up really well. No regrets! Here is what I did...cleaned really well with Krud Kutter, then primed 2 coats with zinsser 123 primer. It is important to use a primer that will adhere to glossy surface. Then I painted with porch and patio paint. Porch and patio paint is very durable! Let dry for a day. Then I sealed with poly acrylic. That's it! I like poly acrylic better than polyurethane , personal presence! Here is a pic of my bathroom with paint floor!

Looks fabulous...thanks so much. All other replies said they had no luck with it holding up!

I think porch and patio paint might be the key. It has certainly held up for us.

I agree, the porch and patio paint is the way to go - it's a messy cleanup, but it will last where others just can't cut it!

If the paints are tough enough to walk on, they must be loaded with high vox chemicals and odors - good for outdoor use but not indoors I would think.

That was my thinking too....I've had to use low VOX paints in my rented apartment because of chemical sensitivities and cautious about anymore chemicals emitting in my small apt....I so would like to change the kitchen vinyl floor but it still frustrates me that updates are coming out of my own pocket w/o any reimbursements....landlord never has updated the kitchen/dinette room floor. The first repair came out of my own pocket and now after 22 years the floor can use an update but the $$$ is not there. I also wanted to find out if I can put a glaze on the ceramic bathroom floor tile because that's the only thing he updated besides the wood floor foyer which came out disastrous....he used poor quality varnish/shellac and never vacuumed the floor prior so you can see all the dirt beads and hair strands that were caught in the shellac prior to drying....then it took two month for the floor to stop being sticky too. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
