Container gardening just got more fun! With just a few supplies, you can turn a simple kitchen utensil into a unique DIY Hanging Colander Planter.
I wanted to do something really fun and unique for Mother’s Day this year so I set out to find the perfect gift. I kept drawing a blank on what exactly I wanted to do though.
So I went shopping with zero idea of what I was going to get and hoped I would find something.Instead of finding something to put in a bag and call it a day, I walked out with the supplies needed to make this hanging colander planter. If I would have done this sooner (you know, not two days before Mother’s Day – whoops!) – I totally would have searched for a used colander to upcycle it. Because those things are everrrrrywhere at thrift stores and rummage sales. So if you’re looking to do this project on the cheap, keep an eye out for one!
Luckily, this is super simple! In less than 30 minutes, you’ll go from simple supplies to beautiful hanging colander planter. It’s the perfect addition to your container garden, too!

I won’t lie – I was sad to give it away. It looked like it belonged on our front porch! So now we’re on the hunt for a colander in our thrifting adventures for our own hanging colander planter.

    Yesterday

I line mine with the weed cloth.

I have the old aluminum ones in 2 sizes.

Can't figure out how to hang them double!

    Any suggestions!

If by hanging double you mean to hang one below the other, put a hook thru the center bottom hole of the upper one before you put the liner & dirt into it - the hook should be heavy enough to hold the weight of the bottom colander full of dirt & plants or I would suggest just using bent coat hanger - but that might not be strong enough - see what hooks or loops the hardware store has that are thin enough & strong enough. You might have to snip between 2 or more holes in top colander to fit a hook strong enough. Your hook on top basket might have to be stronger/heavier too since now holdingup 2 baskets.
