My cabinets are peeling. Is there any kind of paint I can use in them?

How do I strip off the covering before I paint? I would like to paint either white or light gray. Can this even be done?
Very sad bathroom. Can't afford to replace vanity right now but need to do something right away.

sand it down and then prime and repaint. It will take time but will be worth it

The reason the paint is peeling off is because it was put on without sanding prior to painting. When you repaint them make sure you sand first.

it currently is not a paint on the cabinet it is some kind of laminate that was maybe baked on. The cabinet is not wood.

That look like thermofoil, not paint peeling. You can use a heat gun to soften the thermofoil and then gently peel it off. Don't try to do it without the heat, it will damage the MDF under the thermofoil. Once you have it removed you can prime and paint it. You can search for instructions on painting MDF. I did this on my cabinets and they look great. Good luck!

I painted my kitchen cabinets white. I sanded them down and used boat marine paint in white. It's not flat it's sort of shiny but it did not chip. Good luck

That does look like Thermofoil rather than paint. You could always replace just the peeling door with a matching brand new door. http://www.cabinetnow.com/ sells high quality Thermofoil doors in many shapes and sizes so I'm sure you could find a match!

I have the same type of cabinet. I replaced the damaged ones, and they did the same thing years later. It wasn't worth the money. Of course if it is just one door, it may be worth it.

i saw on tv the other day there is a paint that does not require you to sand down the prior application. Does anyone know what kind of paint it is? I think I saw it on an ace commercial. I obviously have to take off the current coding of whatever it is.

Chalk Paint doesn't need sanding..in fact most people use it to keep the distress look

You have Thermofoil cabinets. This is what one Hometalker did to hers.

This happened to my kitchen cabinets. We used a hair dryer to soften the peeling, peeled them, and painted them with General Finishes milk paint and General Finishes QTHS High Performance Water Based Topcoat.

Pamheather you can't sand that damage off. Peel it off after warming it with a heat gun or hair dryer. Then you can lightly sand before priming. Do not soak it with water, since it is MDF. I have had this type of cabinet for over 20 years. It is IMO, not worth replacing/refacing it. It is a type of shrink wrapped vinyl called Thermofoil, and when it lets go, that 's it. I tried painting over the vinyl and it doesn't last, because the vinyl moves causing the paint to crack. I was told by paint and cabinet dealers not to paint it. I had nothing to lose, but a gallon of paint and time. I don't regret it.
